Purity

Pond includes the essentials without unnecessary applications. Drivers work out of the box and are automatically installed from the detected hardware.

Pond ISO is approximately 1.3 GiB, smaller than stock arch, with an installed system occupying around 4.5 GiB.

Pond can be installed and used with just 1 GiB of RAM, keeping it performant on most machines.

Practicality

Pond is for people of all experience levels.

Our Windows installer lets you install Linux the way you’d install an app. It imports supported settings from Windows and solves common dual boot issues, like clock mismatches and Windows drives that refuse to shrink.

NTFS drives are often fragmented, preventing them from shrinking. Our installer individually handles most of these shrink blockers, so Pond can use about as much space as you have free.

Performance

Kernel
optimizations

  • Clang, ThinLTO and -O3
  • EEVDF with shorter base time slices
  • Lower cache-hot migration threshold and bitmask based idle CPU selection
  • Multi-Gen LRU thrashing protection
  • Proactive compaction and watermark boosting disabled

Disk activity
optimizations

  • Spin down disabled and BFQ I/O scheduling for hard drives
  • Btrfs with transparent Zstandard compression
  • SATA link power management at maximum performance

Compressed
swap

  • zram with Zstandard compression
  • Sized to usable RAM
  • Anonymous page reclaim favored over page cache eviction
  • Swap readahead and zswap disabled

On Large
Language Models

We welcome the use of LLMs in writing software. They’re valuable tools that help us explore ideas, solve problems, and write better code.

However, we require contributors to fully understand all of their code. We will not spend time reviewing low effort work.

We want to write great software that we're proud of, and we want contributors to do the same.
